AAC covers a range of communication methods that support children with complex communication needs. This includes low and high tech communication aids alongside the strategies and training that is needed to support how these aids are used to enhance participation and interaction with others in the home, school and community.
Supporting the use of AAC requires specialist skills from a multidisciplinary team led by a Speech Pathologist in both the assessment of and implementation of the strategies for each individual and importantly, their communication partners.
The Plus and Pro Option will provide children and families the opportunity to explore and fine tune their AAC strategies. Both the Plus and Pro Options are designed to augment their current participation in the Stride, Activate, Reach or PITS programs with the aim to maximise the opportunity to enhance participation.
Both the Plus and Pro Options are designed to provide specific and specialist input on how children and young adults use their AAC. Children and young adults can add the Plus or Pro Option to their current participation in the Stride, Activate, Reach or PITS intensive therapy programs.
By adding the Plus Option, an additional speech pathology session will occur once a week alongside their existing program. If appropriate (in discussion with the team), the Pro Option may also be considered. The Pro Option consists of two sessions a week dedicated to AAC that will occur alongside their existing Stride/Reach/Activate/PITS program.
Both the Plus and Pro Options include an individualised initial "elicitation" session with the purpose of defining the focus, goals and ensuring that optimal preparations can be made for the upcoming sessions. Also included (in addition to the individual sessions) is a handover session to the community therapist and family as well as a discharge and recommendation report.
Please refer to the Intensive Therapy Program listing for further information on our programs. Speech Pathology is offered in a multi-disciplinary environment and is not currently available as a standalone offering.
